Since we were about 4 years old
till our university graduation, we were students, hating schools and counting
down the days to graduation (most of us anyway). We thought we
would be free from exams, assignments, classes and we would be able to enjoy
more freedom with the money we earned. Whenever our seniors who were
already working told us to treasure our student life, we were quick to argue
with them. Up till that point, our goals (again, most of us) were to fit in with the crowd, do
well in exams, get a high CAP score, and secure a well-paying job, preferably
in banks. With our first class honor or second upper honor, we fantasize
about working in an important role which can make a difference to
the corporation.
Then
BOOM! We entered the working world and things fall short of our expectations.
We complained. We became bitter but were too scared to leave the job which gave
us no job satisfaction. In this recession, jobs are scarce and we did not
want to leave our security blanket behind.
You will be presented with a lifestyle that appears
comfortable, doing the same things each day with little or no excitement or
mental growth involved.
This is why you need to remember that to take
advantage of the wondrous opportunities life has in store for you, you must get
comfortable with the uncomfortable and choose the road that is most
interesting, regardless of how complicated or unnerving it may be.

I'm pretty sure none of these would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lost faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true of your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all the matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
- Steve Jobs (2005 Stanford Commencement)
What do we do then? At first, I was simply happy to be finally graduating. I didn't realize that it was actually the beginning of my life where I have to make big decisions for myself and be responsible for consequences of my decisions and actions. It was really daunting to finally accept that realization. There was no way of knowing if we were right or wrong. We just need to have faith in ourselves and move on. Taking an advice from the late Steve Jobs, I will keep looking. Will You?
